Teflon tape, properly known as “thread seal tape,” is used in the plumbing industry to seal the threads at the end of a pipe.
Thanks to its unique construction, when used properly, Teflon tape can prevent plumbing leaks by filling the threads of pipe connections. Without it, you could end up with a mess on your hands.
Of course, there are more uses to Teflon tape than just sealing pipe threads, and it goes by many names, too.
What is Teflon Tape ?
Teflon tape is made of polytetrafluoroethylene. That’s a mouthful, so it’s called PTFE for short. This PTFE tape comes pre-cut to a specific width and is then wound on a spool so you can decide how long your piece needs to be.
The material of Teflon tape is typically 3.5mils thick, which is comparable to the thickness of newspaper and typing paper (which vary from 2.5 to 3.5 mils in thickness).
You’ll find the tape material is stretchy, allowing you to wrap it tightly while the material is able to conform to the threads of the pipe. This tape is also water repellent, which is why it’s used in plumbing.

What Do The Different Colours Of Teflon Tape Mean?
In the United States, standards have been set forth to help plumbers (and everyone else) quickly distinguish between the different specifications of thread sealant tape, so be sure you choose the right color.
White Tape
White Teflon tape comes in a single density. It’s made for water pipes that measure ? inches or less. You can also find it in silver color, on occasion, which is made to match the color of the pipe.
Red Tape
If you need something extra dense, go for red tape. Red Teflon tape is triple the density of white tape, designed for pipes of ½ to 2 inches in diameter. It’s also used for pipes that have larger joints, like water distribution pipes. Do note that, while the container is an unmistakable red, the tape itself is usually more pink in color.
Yellow Tape
With double the density of white tape, yellow PTFE tape is made for fuel lines and gas lines.
Green Tape

What Are The Hazards of Incorrect Use?
When you pick the right type of Teflon tape and you use it for its intended application, you’ll find that it works extremely well. However, misuse can lead to some problems.
While Teflon tape and electrical tape seem similar when you see them on the spool in the store, they’re actually very different from each other. Electrical tape gets super sticky after it warms up a couple of times.
Teflon tape actually has no adhesive properties whatsoever. it would also do a poor job of shielding you from electrical shock, so don’t use them interchangeably.
How To Use And Apply Teflon Tape Correctly
Applying Teflon tape may seem simple enough, but since it has no adhesive properties, you have to make sure you wrap it in the right direction and in the right spot or you could end up with a balled-up mess. Here the steps to follow to wrap PTFE tape properly and get a leak-free seal.
- Find the male threads at the end of the pipe. Clean them with a clean dry rag.
- Take the end of your plumber’s tape and place it on the second thread from the pipe’s end. Hold it there with your finger or thumb. The tape should sit flat over the threads and not bunch up. Extend it perpendicularly to the length of the pipe.
- Start wrapping the tape around the pipe, going in the opposite direction that the pipe will be turned when you’re connecting it to the other pipe you’re working with.
- Keep tension on the tape, ensuring that it is snugly wrapped around the pipe. As you overlap the tape, work gradually away from the end of the pipe to completely cover the threads.
- In total, you should wrap the tape around the pipe 4 to 6 times. Finish near the end of the threads, opposite from the pipe’s end. Don’t overwrap the tape too much as that will hinder your ability to connect the pipes securely.
- Grip the tape with your thumb and forefinger, then pull it sharply to break the end of the tape from the spool when you’re finished wrapping. It should break easily.
- Smooth the loose end of the tape over the threads so nothing is sticking up or bunched up. You can now put the pipe into its fitting, Done!
Pro Tips
Keep the first two threads of pipe free of any PTFE tape. This will allow the pipe to engage the fitting and easily start your connection.
After you are done wrapping your thread sealant tape you can use a fingernail or the edge of the spool to chase the threads and flatten the tape. This will prevent any bunching or binding when you tighten up the pipe.
Cut off the excess tape on the remaining exposed threads at connections that you can see. This will keep your work looking extra-professional at shower head connections or exposed plumbing underneath pedestal sinks.

Tape sealants are found all over the plumbing world. They are used in many Industries as there are different tape sealants for specific applications. If you need tape specifically for stainless fittings, there’s a tape for that. Tape sealants are simple to use, but like most things if not used correctly it can cause you stress and stress on the fittings.
In this blog, we are going to go over the different tape sealants available and what the best applications are for each tape.
What is PTFE Tape?
Polytetrafluoroethylene, is short formed to PTFE, for obvious reasons. PTFE is a hydrophobic which basically means neither water or liquids containing water can make PTFE tape wet. PTFE is less likely to cause friction against other solids.
Standard PTFE Tape
Standard PTFE tape is mainly used for water system connections, either potable or non-potable as they are corrosion and acid resistant. Applications where the standard PTFE tape works best is in high pressure lines and used best with most chemicals.
Premium and Specialty PTFE Tapes
The main difference between standard PTFE tapes and specialty PTFE tapes is that the specialty tapes come color coded for specific applications. This makes it easy to ensure you are grabbing the correct tape for each application. Specialty PTFE tape is also much thicker than the standard tape and it has significantly higher density.
White Premium High Density
The white premium PTFE tape is good to be used for all industrial applications. There is no pigments or additives making it good to be used on all applications including water, oil and food processing. Mainly places where non-contamination standards are set pretty high.
Pink Plumbers
Just like the name implies, this PTFE tape is most commonly used by plumbers and pipe fitters. It is color coded pink to signify that this tape is a heavier duty tape than the standard white thread seal tape.
Yellow Gas Line
This PTFE tape is designed specifically for gas lines of all types, propane, butane lines and even natural gas. This yellow PTFE tape meets all gas company standards world wide and it seals threads quickly and easily.
Green Oxygen
This specific tape is colored green making it ideal for oxygen applications like oxygen lines. It is grease free but it does not support combustion.
Gray Stainless Steel
The Gray Stainless tape has nickel pigment color added ensuring it is good to be used with all 
stainless steel fittings. This tape prevents galling and seizing. Being 4 mils thick and having a high density rating makes it the perfect tape for coarse stainless steel threads. Tips for Proper Wrapping
By using a PTFE tape sealant with a minimum thickness of 2.5 mil. you ensure that the tape is thick enough to provide a good seal and you won’t waste tape. To ensure a good seal, wrap the tape in the direction of the threads. You only need to use 2-3 wraps of tape, however thinner tape may need 4-5 wraps. Make sure you start wrapping at the end of the fitting, covering the end to prevent the thread from seizing. For the joint assembly, you should tighten the threaded joint 1-2 turns beyond finger tight, be careful not to over tighten.
Also, be aware of how much tape you are using. Excess tape increases the diameter of the male thread adding additional stress. However, tape that is too thin will not provide good sealing.
Things to Keep in Mind
An important thing to remember is that PTFE tape should not be used when connecting PVC fittings or valves with a female (FPT) thread. If the tape is used on female connections, a wedging action can occur which will cause major stress on the joint during assembly.
PTFE tape does not guarantee a leak free connection. Make sure you always inspect the connections with water pressure to confirm that the connection is not leaking.

What is Thread seal tape
Thread seal tape (also known as PTFE tape or plumber’s tape) is a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film tape commonly used in plumbing for sealing pipe threads. The tape is sold cut to specific widths and wound on a spool, making it easy to wind around pipe threads. It is also known by the genericized trademark Teflon tape; while Teflon is, in fact, identical to PTFE, Chemours (the trade-mark holders) consider this usage incorrect, especially as they no longer manufacture Teflon in tape form. Thread seal tape lubricates allowing for a deeper seating of the threads, and it helps prevent the threads from seizing when being unscrewed. The tape also works as a deformable filler and thread lubricant, helping to seal the joint without hardening or making it more difficult to tighten, and instead of making it easier to tighten.
Typically the tape is wrapped around a pipe’s thread three times before it is screwed into place. It is commonly used commercially in applications including pressurized water systems, central heating systems, and air compression equipment.
PTFE thread seal tape applied on an NPT fitting, in the direction of the threads. Thread tape is appropriate for use on tapered threads, where the sealing force is a wedge action. Parallel threads may not seal effectively with or without tape, as they are intended to be sealed by a gasket. Thread sealing tape is almost entirely applied by hand, although at least one machine is available for production wrapping of fittings.
PTFE tape is also commonly used in the stretching of body piercings, through a process known as taping, because it is inert and safe for this use. The wearer wraps layers of the tape around a plug, slowly increasing the size and thus slowly increasing the size (gauge) of the piercing.
Hazards
Overuse or misapplication of thread tape may be a hazard. Excess application of PTFE thread tape can prevent mating threads from fully engaging, reducing the shear point of the threads. Combining thread-seal tape with a pipe dope compound can also overload threads. Also, internal overhangs of loose material may constrict a joint or slough off and form a foreign body that could jam a valve seat. Therefore, use of PTFE tape as a thread sealant is generally not considered appropriate in fluid power (hydraulic) systems.
Misnomers
Familiarity with the Teflon brand of fluoropolymers has led to the practice of erroneously referring to PTFE-based thread seal tape as “Teflon tape”. Chemours, the owner of the Teflon trademark, no longer manufactures any thread seal tape, and the company has launched a campaign against the practice.
The term “plumber’s tape” has been applied to thread seal tape in recent years. In the plumbing trade, plumber’s tape is the name given to a strap of material with holes in it used for supporting pipes and fixtures.
