2022 Audi R8 Review
Overview
Supercar looks and speed. All-wheel-drive security. Comfortable enough for everyday driving.
Minimal cargo space. Doesn't deliver the power and handling of some rivals.
The 2022 Audi R8 offers an intoxicating mix of supercar performance, sheer power, and eye-catching design combined with daily civility. It's a great choice for drivers who want to enjoy their supercar every day of the week.
What's New for 2022
Trims and Pricing
The 2022 Audi R8 is available in two body styles: coupe or spyder convertible. Both come in rear-wheel-drive or Quattro all-wheel-drive models. The entry-level V10 Coupe RWD has been the most popular model, but we recommend the R8 V10 Performance Coupe Quattro version. We'll explain why.
V10 Coupe RWD
With a starting price of $150,195 (including a $1,495 destination fee), the V10 Coupe RWD is the most affordable R8. As the name suggests, it is a closed coupe with the 562-hp version of the V10 engine, Audi's S Tronic automatic transmission. Nappa leather seating, dual-zone climate control, and auto-dimming, power-folding, electrically adjustable heated exterior mirrors, a retractable rear spoiler, 20-inch alloy wheels, and adaptable suspension dampers are standard.
V10 Spyder RWD
The R8 V10 Spyder RWD ($162,395) essentially matches the equipment of the rear-wheel-drive coupe model but in a two-seat convertible body style.
V10 Performance Coupe Quattro
The V10 Performance Coupe Quattro ($201,295) adds a higher-horsepower (602-hp) version of the V10 engine, Quattro all-wheel drive, the Sport exhaust package, and a more aggressive fixed-damper suspension setup. The front brakes are also significantly larger to improve performance. Exterior cues only found on the top-of-the-line edition include a titanium front lip spoiler, rocker sill inlay and rear exhaust surround, a carbon-fiber fixed rear wing, and 20-inch titanium wheels. The interior has even more leather and an Alcantara headliner. Overall, this version of the R8 not only offers the most performance but also the greatest value.
V10 Performance Spyder Quattro
At a base price of $214,995, the 2022 R8 V10 Performance Spyder Quattro could be considered the ultimate R8. But some performance purists might prefer the coupe body style. The Spyder Quattro includes all the performance enhancement and interior upgrades of the Coupe Quattro.
Engine and Performance
The 2022 R8 is powered by a 5.2-liter non-turbocharged V10 engine, which revs so fast and sounds so good, it gives the R8 some race-car vibes. Even without a pair of turbochargers, which are very common in today's supercar sphere, it makes a lot of power. In the R8's rear-wheel-drive trims, it delivers 562 hp. In the R8 Quattro, it is tweaked to offer 602 hp. Big numbers for sure but midpack stats in this class, which is led by the 640-hp Porsche 911 Turbo S.
All R8s are equipped with Audi's excellent seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission that has shift-it-yourself capabilities. It isn't the smoothest or most sophisticated gearbox in this class, but it delivers a refined, quick response. The result is incredible acceleration and stupendous speed. Every 2022 R8 boasts top track speeds of over 200 mph and 0-60 mph acceleration times in the 3.2-to-3.6-second range, true supercar performance. Some drivers might prefer the handling feel of the rear-wheel-drive models, but we're fans of the added security and all-weather traction of all-wheel drive. The R8 also rides very comfortably by supercar standards, soaking up bumps and rough roads so well we wouldn't hesitate to drive it cross-country.

As a low-volume specialty model, the 2022 Audi R8 has not been tested and evaluated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The R8 is light on electronic safety and driver-assistance technology. Acoustic front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera system are standard. A blind-spot warning system would be welcome since rearward visibility is limited.
