Anyone know what the ESP Dynometer Test is/does ??
Have discovered the secret MB diagnostics display on my C209 CLK.
Nice info on it. Basically four screens:-
1. Battery Voltage
2. Vehicle VIN No. (beware if you buy another instrument cluster ??)
3. ESP Dynometer test — options are the default ‘off’ and ‘w.ter.15 on’
4. Software type, Hardware type, and sump OIL LEVEL LITRES — interesting to see how much it drops when driving and how long it takes to drain back when engine is switched off.
All good stuff, but what does ESP Diagnostic Test Do ?

Access varies, the following works on 2003 C class, new CLK (209s) and maybe W211 E classes which use the same cluster as my CLK. 2000 — 2002 C Classes are slightly different — see later
1. Put key in ignition switch and turn to position 1
2. Use steering wheel page down button to select a on board computer screen other than the one with the mileage info (ie audio, OTG, etc)
3. push reset buttons 3 times in rapid succession
4. screen chnages to the diagnostic mode
5. use up and down buttons on strg wheel to select different screens
6. to see oil level in litres the ignition must be switched to position 2
7. Can watch the oil level, and battery voltage screens during engine fire up and running.
For 2000 — 2002 C classes instead of pushing the reset three times hold until a beep is heard — this can be anything up to 40seconds, during which time the screen may chnage back to the mileage page — don’t worry just keep the reset pushed in, it will not reset the mileage display or the long term fuel consumption info.
To clear, turn off ignition and remove key
I have’t tried it very often as yet, but apparently you sometimes have to wait some time after the key has been removed before it can be put back into the slot and access the info. For instance , if you arrive home form work and then decide to put the key back in straight away you might not get the access. Wait 10 minutes and should be OK.

After the actual level is shown, explain the processes there after. What action do I need to take with the ESP Dynamo meter test (w.term.15off and then VIN WD?
Hello, There’s no other actions you need to take. Just confirm the oil level is correct.
Thanks for the info, with this info I would try changing the oil myself.
Much appreciated AI staff.
Very helpful, I have the car for 4 years but never knew this mathed of checking oil level from the cluster menue, thanks very much for this helpful artical. Keep writing helpful tips like this to help others like me.
Thanks for the feedback! We sure will!
Hi i can access this menu on my 2007 c class kompressor but the oil level does not show, any ideas on what i am doing wrong or does this function not work on my car?
It may not work on your vehicle
I have c200K 2007 super sport edition but I can’t find oil level in the secret menu at all, I followed the steps but in the image you have here I can see OL for OIL but in mine there isn’t anything like that
so how can I reset my service?
Not too sure sorry! Sometime the menus are different.
Very helpful post with good pictures. But is there any other way of checking oil? I don’t have a dipstick on my car. I tried to go through the menu like as post shows. I don’t have oil option in description…
Instrument cluster
The Instrument Cluster is also known as the Instrument Panel or Multi-function Display.
Hidden Menu
Instrument cluster hidden menu allows to see voltage measurement, vehicle VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and other data.
How to Access
Watch this video or see Access — MFD Hidden Menu Steps below.
Access — MFD Hidden Menu
- Get into car and turn Ignition Lock to Position 1 (ACCESSORIES) but DO NOT start the engine.
- Set the Instrument Cluster Multi-Function Display (MFD) to show mileage (total vehicle mileage and trip miles).
- Push the R (reset) button on the Instrument Cluster three times within 2 seconds.
- The MFD will display something like «UB:12.3V».
- Use the Steering Wheel ‘UP’ or ‘DOWN’ buttons for other Hidden displays. The MFD Hidden Menu will scroll through;
- UB (Battery Voltage)
- DC W220MJ03 (Including ‘OIL LEVEL’ and Motor Type.)
- ESP DYNAMOMETER TEST
- WIA TYP: (Including the VIN)
- CONFIRMATION (Service Confirmation)
Using the MFD Hidden Menu for analysing the battery voltage (UB)
- Access the MFD Hidden Menu as above. When first opened the MFD will display something like «UB:12.3V». In this example the 12.3V is the battery voltage with the car at rest with engine off and alternator not charging. The voltage should be between 11.8V and 12.5V and will typically be 12.3V with a new battery and the car at rest for about 24 hours or more.
- How long the engine has been running and hence the alternator has been charging.
- The state of the battery charge.
- The age of the battery.
- What electrical load there is on the battery. For example having the headlights on and or the Air Conditioner on may reduce the actual battery voltage.
- The performance of the alternator. A slipping Serpentine belt or a faulty alternator with say failed diodes or faulty voltage regulator circuit will affect the displayed battery voltage.
Setting Clock
With navigation installed press COMAND Service, System, Clock, Set Hours etc.
Issues
- The fluorescent tubes used to generate illumination and back-lighting on the gauges eventually flicker and die.
- Missing pixels due to ribbon connector failure.

Remove and Replace Cluster
The following video shows how to
remove the cluster, causes of a bad cluster, where to send it for repair service, and how to reinstall it. Repair service as of August of 2019 is cheap enough still not to bother taking it apart yourself in order to first diagnose which of the 3 mosfet transistors or the high voltage transformer is the culprit, ordering the replacement part, waiting, replacing and hoping it all works. As of August, 2019, the repair service is still cheap enough (right around #200). Put the following in your browser search or URL line to find a Repair Service Vendor: W220-W215 Instrument Cluster Repair Service.
Lighting Repair
The W220 S-Class, has an interesting lighting architecture, incorporating LEDs and fluorescent tubes to generate illumination and back-lighting on the gauges. The tubes eventually flicker and die, causing this malfunction to be a recall notice with Mercedes. Recognized for up to 10 years from MY, for registered owners, Mercedes will honor the recall, with enough coaxing. For everyone else, repair is the only option. Chinese made substitute transformers and FETs may do the trick, they may not. With this set of instruments, repair was not an option, so an experimental LED substitution was attempted, and turned out successful. An LED driver circuit replaced the 4000V transformer, retained the dimming ability, reduced current draw, and provided ample lighting. White LEDs were grafted in place of the fluorescent tubes, and blue LEDs behind the LCD displays.
