BMW XM 2023

The new 2023 BMW XM marks the second vehicle to carry such prestigious significance from BMW. The first M-exclusive vehicle was the M1 supercar, and now we see the large XM luxury SUV that brings singular qualities found in many M cars.BMW M’s first standalone vehicle – a plug-in hybrid SUV – in more than 40 years will be unveiled later this month the latest teaser for its upcoming flagship SUV, BMW confirmed what rumors had previously indicated: the production version of the 2023 BMW XM will be revealed to the world on September 27.Previewed in a short video that shows the front of the vehicle slowly being unveiled as a garage door rises, and the thin daytime running lights, the grille, and the headlights light up. Spy photos and patent drawings have revealed that the production version of the SUV will feature large kidney grilles, and a front fascia full of complicated folding lines. If the concept was any indication, prepare for a rather loud-looking beast.

A twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 isn’t new to the BMW powertrain portfolio, but in the XM it’ll be partnered with an electric motor and a battery pack to create a whopping 644 horsepower. BMW says an even more powerful 750-hp variant will join the lineup later. During our initial test drive of a prototype model in Austria, we noted the powertrain’s immediate power delivery and estimated that it should get the XM to 60 mph in about 3.5 seconds. That will put it in the same neighborhood as performance SUVs such as the Lamborghini Urus and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, both of which delivered zero-to-60-mph times of 3.2 seconds at our testing. The XM uses a coil-spring suspension system that’s augmented by adaptive dampers and active anti-roll bars to provide a surprisingly compliant ride when set to its Comfort driving mode. When set to Sport, the XM’s handling is responsive and eager which makes for good fun on a twisty road.

A short teaser video by BMW USA has confirmed the 2023 BMW XM plug-in hybrid SUV will be unveiled on September 28 at 8 am AEST, after several leaks and previews. In the 25-second video posted to YouTube – titled ’The Worlds of X and M collide’ – a grumble from the XM’s twin-turbo V8 petrol engine can be heard, which will be assisted by plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology. While we think the concept’s exterior represents a close estimation of what will eventually roll off the line at BMW’s manufacturing plant in South Carolina, we expect that several of its posh interior details will not make the jump to production. The geometric headliner, for instance, will probably be replaced with fabric or a panoramic sunroof. We love the vintage leather upholstery and the quilted velvet rear seats, but BMW will likely choose more subdued materials for the final product. As the lights turn on in this teaser video, the sound of a roaring engine can also be heard. The automaker has previously confirmed that the source of that sound will be a newly-developed V8 engine. Together with an electric motor, the plug-in hybrid powertrain will deliver 644 hp (480 kW/653 PS) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque.

Reports suggest that BMW is planning an even more powerful version of the XM to take on the latest super SUV models. The range-topping XM will allegedly offer up to 738 hp (550 kW/748 PS) and 737 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque. It won’t all be about power, though. The plug-in hybrid powertrain will offer some quiet comfort as well, with the XM will be capable of going 30 miles (48 km) on electric power alone, as measured on the EPA drive cycle, and 50 miles (80 km), per the WLTP standard.BMW describes the XM as the union of its X and M lineups, and it’s expected to go into production in December of this year. The flagship SUV will be built at BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina, plant. For your money’s worth, the XM is going to have rear-wheel steering (up to 2.5 degrees), 30-50 miles of electric range depending on the test cycle, along with active anti-roll bars with a 48-volt electrical architecture. The V8 engine is the mild-hybrid S68 unit and works with a newly developed eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. What the production version won’t have will be the Concept XM’s fancy cabin as the interior will be closer to what you’ll find in current high-end BMWs. A new performance-oriented BMW crossover makes its way across the ocean to be a sporty and fun vehicle to drive. The XM slots above the three-row X7 but only had two rows of seats while delivering excellent performance. The concept model showed up in November, giving us an idea of what this new SUV would bring to the drive. A large, curved display stretches across the dashboard until it meets up with the passenger’s grab handle that connects to the center console. The display serves as both a digital gauge cluster as well as on-board infotainment, and we can see BMW’s familiar iDrive rotary controller located just right of the shift lever. We’re expecting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to be standard, and additional features such as SiriusXM satellite radio, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a premium stereo system to be included as well.

When BMW showed the XM concept, it was pretty clear looking at certain details that the vehicle would be going into production pretty much unchanged, ready to polarize opinions at a corner pub near you. And now that we’ve had our first look at the production XM, it looks like we were right and there are hardly any changes to report on.Granted, the vehicle photographed by Wilco Blok still has its front and rear fascias hid, but we do get a very good look at everything else, including the interior. And we don’t expect the front or rear light cluster design to change anyway, so upfront you should expect the same two-tier design that not everybody is on-board with, while in the back it will get huge blade-style clusters in-line with the rest of the range. This example also had its wheels hidden, so we can’t say anything about their design — they do look massive, though, and we think we can make out that they are 23 inches in size, surely staggered, with very wide 275-section tires up front. The interior is mostly covered and what we can see is pretty typical BMW fare — it predictably gets the M steering wheel, M automatic transmission selector, and red starter buttons, but we could have told you this without this new batch of photos. Expect it to stay true to the concept, so it will feature a curved two-screen array running version 8 of its infotainment software and what we expect to be very aggressive sports seats. This plug-in hybrid monster will be motivated by a twin-turbo V8 which together with electric motors is expected to produce around 750 horsepower and a mountain of torque, 1,000 Nm (737 pound-feet), sprinting to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 4 seconds and topping out at around 284 km/h (177 mph).Looking at the side profile, this thing is huge. More importantly, every styling element on this SUV is enormous.

Most Expensive 2023 BMW XM Costs $168,395

BMW keeps things simple by making all of the exterior colors and wheel designs no-cost options.

2023 BMW XM

The BMW XM is the first dedicated M model since the M1. Rather than a mid-engine supercar, the new one is a big SUV with a hybrid-assisted V8. If this is up your alley, then the configurator is now available to build your ideal example. With every option available, the most expensive one available costs $168,395.

The XM starts at $159,995 after the $995 destination fee. There’s only one trim level available. There are seven exterior colors available, and all of them are no-cost options. They are: Carbon Black Metallic, Black Sapphire Metallic, Mineral White Metallic, Marina Bay Blue Metallic, Dravit Grey Metallic, Toronto Red Metallic, and Cape York Green Metallic.

There are also four wheel choices, and picking any of them has no effect on the XM’s price. A 22-inch design with five pairs of spokes is available with performance or high-performance tires. A 23-inch size has seven thick spokes with pentagon-shaped holes in them, and buyers can select either an aluminum or Nightgold finish.

Inside, XM customers can pick four shades of merino leather. Black is the only no-cost option. There’s a mix of Sakhir Orange and black for $1,500. A combo of Silverstone white and Vintage Coffee brown is $2,500. Deep Lagoon teal and Vintage Coffee is also $2,500.

There are a few options available. At $3,400, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System is the most expensive and adds Diamond Dome tweeters, fully active amplification channels, and QuantumLogic Surround/Dynamic Sound Equalizing. The M Driver’s Package is $2,500 and raises the limited top speed to 168 miles per hour (270 kilometers per hour) from the stock 155 mph (250 kph). It also includes a one-day class at the BMW Performance Center.

There are three no-cost options available. Nightgold metallic exterior trim can accent the kidney grille, around the upper portion of the windows, along the doors, and the rear diffuser. Customers also have the choice of red or blue brake calipers.

All examples of the XM use the S68 twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 and have an electric motor that integrates into the eight-speed automatic gearbox. The result is a total output of 644 hp (480 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm). Despite a hefty curb weight of 6,062 pounds (2,750 kilograms), the SUV can hustle to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in 4.1 seconds.

M-Sport
